BILL KELLER OF THE NEW YORK TIMES ON “HOW TO LEGALIZE POT”

Bill Keller, media legend and former editor of the New York Times, weighs in on what legalization may look like. http://nyti.ms/13C88W0 Right now, my goal is much more modest – decriminalization.

The legalization that Keller is talking about would eliminate all penalties for pot. Like alcohol, adults could possess and use it. This is now the law in two states, Colorado and Washington State. Whether the feds will step in to prevent these states from implementing these new laws is a process which will have to play out over the next months and perhaps years.

Paul Zukerberg’s plan for DC is more modest. Marijuana would still be prohibited. But the penalty would be reduced. Instead of jail and prosecution, adults would be given a citation and fined. For juveniles, it’s parental notification and an educational class.
