Support from Republican New York mayor Michael Bloomberg was not enough to convince Republican New York senators to support a bill which would decriminalize carrying personal use amounts of marijuana in New York state.
Led by NY Senate majority leader Dean Skelos (R-Long Island) the New York senate nixed a plan by Gov. Andrew Cuomo treat the possession of personal use quantities of marijuana as a civil infraction.
Repeating the same old song, Republicans claimed that marijuana inevitably leads to the use of hard drugs and that decriminalization would “send the wrong message.” apparently the right message is we are going to arrest loads of black and latino kids during illegal stop and frisks and then ruin their lives. We are going to saddle them with criminal convictions, suspend them from school, revoke their student loans and deport them if their parents didn’t get their papers straight.
