The DCist is reporting that Capitol Hemp has agreed to close its two stores following DC police raids. Last October, DC Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier ordered the Capitol Hemp raid, seizing rolling papers, water pipes and books on marijuana.
In a series of raids designed to support her bid for increasing her force to 4,000 officers, Lanier has made busting stores for drug paraphernalia her number one priority. Last year, the DC Court of Appeals handed Lanier her biggest win to date, upholding the conviction of mini-mart cashier who sold paraphernalia to an undercover. Since then, MPD funneled resources into eradicating paraphernalia.
Capitol Hemp, which employed many DC residents who will not be unemployed, was always a good neighbor, and scrupulously checked ID’s to bar minors. But in the war on marijuana, that’s not enough.
