Today President Obama nominated Rainey Brandt to be a new judge at the DC Superior Court. Brandt, a graduate of American University and Catholic University School of Law, is currently the special counsel to Superior Court Chief Judge Lee Satterfield. If confirmed, Brandt will replace the wonderful Judge Joan Zeldon, who retired in December 2011.
Brandt has long been active in the D.C. legal community, serving on the board of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia, and as counsel to Judge Satterfield’s predecessor, former chief judge Rufus King. She has also clerked for Superior Court Judges Michael L. Rankin and Stephanie Duncan-Peters.
Brandt was a well-regarded adjunct professor at the American University Law School her in Washington, where she received the Outstanding Adjunct Professor Award in 2009.
How Judge Brandt will rule in marijuana and other controlled substances cases, only time will tell. But Brandt has served on various committees addressing prisoner issues and worked with inmates and staff at the D.C. Jail, so she has seen the system from all sides.
