Officials in Washington State have announced that supporters of marijuana legalization have collected enough signatures to place legalization on the November ballot.
Voters in California rejected a ballot initiative to legalize pot in 2010. Exit polls showed voter concern about how production and sales would be regulated.
The Washington State proposal addresses these issues by requiring that sales be to adults over 21 years of age and that sales be through stores licensed by the state Alcohol Control Board.
A similar form of state controlled distribution has been proposed in the Virginia legislator, as reported here earlier:
